LEIGH WAR MEMORIAL

Cenotaph. Surmounted by sarcophagus on which is placed a wreath slightly overhanging on two sides. Two Bronze panels each containing 350 names of the dead recessed between two corinthian columns.

Leigh's World War I Memorial was designed in 1919 by Prestwich, Ernest and was unveiled on September 30th 1922 by General Sir Beauvoir de Lisle, it is made from Portland stone and measures 822cm high it also incorporates two bronze panels. Donations from the public were solicited by former mayor Councillor Ashworth who told the crowd that those who refused to contribute "loved money more than then men they were honouring loved life." The memorial cost £200. It is located at Church Street gardens, and can be found less than a 1 minute walk down Silk Street, off the main stretch of Bradshawgate in the town centre.
